The end of Magento 1 in sight

With that Magento 2 came out, immediately came the questions about what that would mean for Magento 1. How long will it be supported, when should I switch, or in other words; where do I stand? There are answers:

Magento has announced that Magento 1 until June 2020 is supported. Specifically for Magento commerce versions 1.13 and 1.14, both security patches and quality updates will be released for this, all versions below that will only get the security patches.

For Magento 1 Open Source (which is the most widely used), security patches will only be released for versions 1.5 to 1.9. Again - until June 2020.

Magento has also announced that it will no longer support PHP 5.6. From PHP itself, support for this code base stops and Magento is no longer investing in it as a result. It is advisable that if you still stay on Magento 1, you do get your PHP version updated. Only PHP7 will continue with support until 2020, and support for PHP 5.6 already ends on 31 December 2018.
