Magento 2: To switch or not to switch?

Magento 2 has been out for a while, of course. Indeed, there is already a 2.1 version. Still, the question remains: should everyone get it?

If you don't have a Magento installation yet and you are starting a new project: do it! It's a great time to start your shop. In the 2.1 version, the first improvements have been made, the first teething problems have been solved and you can use a wonderful system. With the biggest e-commerce market share you can also assume that the men and women at Magento know what they're doing, and then when a new version is released, I recommend you take a look at whether it meets your needs.

You already have a Magento 1 installation, but are thinking of switching to Magento 2
Magento 1 is already almost 10 years old. Of course, many new versions have been released, but the basics still date back to 2007, while technically a lot has changed over time. For instance, the code is heavier than necessary, and if you have a non-optimised environment, you can notice this very well in terms of performance. On the other hand, developers are currently much more familiar with Magento 1 than with Magento 2. We are, of course, training intensively ourselves to master Magento 2 as well as Magento 1, but in general, there will be fewer developers who can run a Magento 2 installation right now. Also, all extension builders are busy getting their extensions ready for Magento 2, but this too takes time, development and often some teething problems. However, we see that this is being done at a fast pace; everyone wants to keep up.

If you have an outdated Magento installation (below 1.9), then I would seriously consider whether to get a new installation built on Magento 2 or upgrade to the latest Magento 1 version. You may find that the costs are not even terribly far apart. This obviously depends on the complexity of your shop. Magento 2 is especially praised for its speed and ease of use, so if those are also things you run into from time to time, I would take a close look at Magento 2 and weigh up the investment.

Totally fresh
Magento 2 is not a version you upgrade to. It has to be completely rebuilt. This results in ease of use for both the customer and the website owner, improved speed and a fully responsive base (including the base template).
Developers can work with more modern (and better) code, and some things that used to be installed as extensions are already in the core, such as full page cache. It has a testing framework that makes it easier for us to maintain your shop, and other techniques that make it easier for the developer, saving on development costs.

Choices, choices
To switch or not to switch? As I said, if you have an outdated environment and you want to upgrade anyway, I recommend you seriously consider it. Do you have a latest version, is everything running smoothly and you don't get any complaints? Then just use your latest version and maintain it properly. If you do foresee that you are going to grow considerably (cool!), then you can check whether the new platform offers more room for optimisations and thus you can guarantee your speed (and thus conversion!).

We are already implementing a number of Magento 2 installations ourselves and are also talking to website owners about what they can best do with their shop. We like doing that; together we consider what is important and what profit can be made. If you would like to discuss what is best for you, raise the alarm, we will think with you.
